Christopher Orr’s small paintings depict phantasmagoric scenes in which the distinction between reality and illusion are dissolved.

Christopher Orr (born 1967) has had recent solo shows at Hauser & Wirth, Zurich, Artsway, Hampshire (both 2010) and IBID PROJECTS, London (2009). Group exhibitions include the Royal Academy of Arts, London, CAPC, Museum of Contemporary Art Bordeaux, and Tate Britain, London.

Part figurative, part abstract, Orr’s intense small canvases continue his on-going exploration of the language of painting. His most recent series of works draw from both art historical and cultural references but are abstracted through painterly techniques or cropping of details.

In “We Too Receive” layers of pigment have been built up, whilst elsewhere paint has been scraped off, the final scene echoing the dramatic backdrop to a Romanticist landscape. Combining often ordinary source material to produce extraordinary juxtapositions, Orr creates a painterly vision full of free agency that is entirely his own.
